In an announcement dated December 21, 2016 the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that effective March 20, 2017, organic industry growers and handlers will be able to apply for federal subsidies to help offset the cost of initial certification costs as well as yearly maintenance costs.
Farm Service Agency (FSA) Administrator, Val Dolcini issued a statement:
“USDA reimburses organic producers up to 75 percent of the cost of organic certification, but only about half of the nation’s organic operations currently participate in the program. Starting March 20, USDA will provide a uniform, streamlined process for organic producers and handler to apply for organic cost share assistance either by mail or in person at USDA office located in almost every rural county in the country.”
Are you or your organization eligible? Any producer or handler who has paid fees to a USDA accredited agent and have received USDA Certification are eligible for the Cost Share Program.
What fees are qualify? Application fees, inspection costs, inspector travel costs, user fees, sales assessments, postage and newly added transitional certification and state organic fees.
How much can we be reimbursed? Up to $750 per certification scope – crops, handling, livestock, wild crops, transitional certification and state organic fees.
